They declared war on bottled water (TA NEA)
War on bottled water by experts because of the environmental pollution.
Millions of plastic bottles are destructive to the environment
The Quality
As Todd Jarvis, head of the Water Resources Graduate Program at the University of Oregon, points out, consumers mistakenly believe that spring water is very clean and are unaware that water near the ground often concentrates contaminants that are rarely found in municipal reservoirs.
In support of quality, experts point out that for tap water, limits have been set for the concentration of harmful substances such as benzene, which is not the case for bottled. Also the tap water does not come into contact with the plastic of the bowl, which at high temperatures can leave harmful substances in the water. Which explains why the war in the bottled water in terms of scientists.
How much bottled water costs the environment
- The Production
The 154 billion litres of water consumed in a year are bottled in 2.5 billion tonnes of plastic, which requires 81 million litres of oil and 600 billion litres of water to produce.
- The Transfer
To transport 10,000 plastic water bottles, a truck uses 1 litre of diesel every 4 kilometres.
To travel 1,000 km, the truck will consume 250 litres of diesel, i.e. 25 cc of diesel for each bottle.
Multiplying 25 cubic centimetres by 100, i.e. the annual average consumption in bottles in the European Union, shows that one bottle per day consumes 2.5 litres of diesel per year.
- The Infection
When bottles are burned in incinerators, they produce chloric acid, heavy metals and dioxins. As little as a third of the plastic turns to ash.
30 plastic bottles release into the atmosphere: 40 g of hydrocarbons, 22 g of sulphur oxides, 18 g of carbon monoxide and 2-3 kg of carbon dioxide
Bottled water is 600 times more expensive than tap water in Athens.
